One hundred and twenty-nine years of looking up

A working chronology of the Haldane Observatory at Cairn Rannoch — from a shepherd's hut with a borrowed refractor to a distributed sky survey read by forty thousand people a night.

A private subscription, a hill, and very cold hands.

Elspeth Haldane buys the hill for £212

A retired schoolmistress and amateur variable-star observer purchases eleven acres of grazing land at 486 metres, chiefly because the summit is above the valley's winter fog line. The first instrument is a 4-inch refractor on loan from the Perth Philosophical Society.

The stone dome is raised

Built from granite quarried on site by four masons over nineteen months. The rotating cap runs on cannonballs set in a channel — a cheap solution that still turns, and still needs greasing every spring.

First continuous weather ledger begun

Pressure, temperature and sky condition recorded every night at 21:00. The ledger has never lapsed for more than eleven consecutive days, including both wars.

Fire in the plate store

A paraffin heater destroys roughly 2,000 glass negatives from the observatory's first three decades. What survives — 640 plates, scorched at the edges — becomes the core of the modern digitisation programme.

Transferred to the national trust for science

The Haldane family gifts the site on the condition that observing time remain free to any amateur who applies in writing. That clause has never been amended, and it still accounts for one night in seven.

The 1.2-metre Ferrier reflector sees first light

Ground and figured over seven years in the basement workshop. On the night of first light the team observed the Ring Nebula, then, by all accounts, drank the entire contents of the tea room.

Photometry group formed

Six researchers begin a long-cadence survey of eclipsing binaries. Their observing protocol — three filters, thirty-second cadence, no exceptions — is still the house standard.

CCD replaces the photographic plate

A 320 × 512 chip, cooled with dry ice hauled up the access track twice a week. Sensitivity improves roughly forty-fold overnight; the darkroom becomes a bicycle store.

Dark-sky covenant signed with three councils

Street lighting within nine kilometres is capped and shielded. Measured sky brightness at zenith improves from 20.4 to 21.6 mag/arcsec² across the following decade — the single largest gain in the observatory's history.

Remote operation from Perth

A fibre line replaces the winter drive. Observers still come up for the summer maintenance week, mostly for the hill.

The full plate archive goes online

All 640 surviving negatives, plus 71,000 later frames, released under an open licence with no registration wall. Within a year, three separate groups use the 1920s plates to extend light curves back ninety years.

Rannoch Sky Survey begins

Four wide-field cameras image the northern sky every clear night at twelve-minute cadence. The alert stream publishes candidate transients within ninety seconds of the shutter closing.

Forty thousand nightly readers

The public alert feed passes forty thousand subscribers. A quarter of confirmed classifications now come from volunteers outside the institution — the 1948 covenant, running on different hardware.

Re-coating the Ferrier mirror

The 1.2-metre goes down to the coating plant in April for the first time since 1998. It returns in September; the cannonball dome will be greased while we wait.
