The short version
We started the Bramblecoat because our old one finally gave out after nineteen winters, and nobody was making its replacement. It is a four-pocket field coat in dry-waxed cotton — the kind that goes matte and chalky at the elbows rather than staying sticky.
Cut two inches longer than a standard field jacket so it covers you when you sit on a wet gate. Bellows pockets deep enough for a flask, a whistle and a folded map, with storm flaps that actually meet.
- 8 oz dry-waxed cotton, milled in Lancashire
- Corduroy under-collar, tartan-lined body
- Two-way brass front zip under a snap storm placket
- Bar-tacked at all eleven stress points

Care & reproofing
Never machine wash, never dry clean, never put it near a radiator. Brush off dried mud with a stiff brush; sponge the rest with cold water and nothing else.
When water stops beading — usually every second or third winter — send it back to us. We strip, rewax and repair it in the Kendal workshop, free for as long as you own the coat. Turnaround is about three weeks in summer and six in November, because everyone remembers in November.

From the wearers
4.6 / 5 · 218Bought it for dog walks and ended up wearing it to a wedding. The pockets swallow an entire thermos. Only note: give it a fortnight before you decide about the stiffness.
Sized down and glad I did. The tartan lining is heavier than I expected — genuinely too warm above 14°C, which I'm treating as a feature.
Coat №0412 of 640
Each Bramblecoat is numbered on the inside pocket flap by whoever finishes it. If yours comes back to us for reproofing in twenty years, that number tells us which bench it left from and who to blame for the buttonholes.
