The Dither Was
the Point
When a panel gives you four shades, the gradient has to be invented rather than described.
Artists working inside a 160×144 frame learned to trade smoothness for rhythm. A checkerboard read as a mid-tone from arm's length and as texture up close, which meant every surface carried two truths at once — a trick modern displays quietly retired.
Why it still reads
Constraint produces legibility. With four values you cannot hide a weak silhouette behind a soft shadow, so shape does the work. The lesson survives the hardware: decide the silhouette first, and let the fill be honest.
Field note
Hold any dithered plate at 40 cm and it resolves. At 15 cm it dissolves into pattern. Designers of the era chose their viewing distance the way a painter chooses a brush.
