The airport that closes for weather and opens for light

Keflavík in February is less a terminal than a waiting room for the sky. We stayed four days and left with a notebook of wind speeds.

The ground crew have a word for the hour when the runway lamps go on and the cloud is still bright: skímu, the thin light. It lasts about eleven minutes. Nobody schedules around it, but everybody watches it.

We rented a car we did not need, drove the Reykjanes road twice, and learned that the best coffee in the country is poured at a fuel station in Grindavík by a man who used to fly the mail route north.

A ferry timetable, read as poetry

Baltic crossings are printed on paper the colour of weak tea. We collected eleven of them and found a rhythm nobody intended.

Departures cluster at the hour and the half; arrivals scatter. Set the columns side by side and you get something close to a metre — long, long, short, long — which is how the harbourmaster in Tallinn says he memorised the summer schedule as a boy.

The printed sheets are being retired in April. We asked for the last box and were given three.

Nine hours of pine, and one very good sandwich

The overnight to Vilnius has no restaurant car, which is the entire reason the platform kiosk exists.

Rye, butter with too much salt, a slice of smoked cheese, and a paper napkin folded twice. Two euros forty. The woman who makes them has run the kiosk since 1994 and refuses to name it.

Sleep comes somewhere after the border. You wake to birch instead of pine and know you have arrived without checking.

What the baggage hall knows about a city

Carousel 6 at Humberto Delgado tells you more in twenty minutes than a guidebook does in a week.

Surfboards in March. Cardboard boxes bound in packing tape, addressed by hand. A cello in a hard case with three airline stickers still attached, none of them removed on purpose.

We counted 214 bags and 9 that never came. The man beside us said it happens on the Vilnius flight more than any other, and shrugged like it was weather.

The landing everyone films and nobody describes well

Madeira's runway sits on 180 concrete columns above the sea. The approach is a left turn you feel in your teeth.

Pilots are certified specifically for it. On the ground afterwards there is a particular silence in the cabin — not relief exactly, more like everyone agreeing not to mention it.

The bus into Funchal costs €3.35 and takes the coast road. Sit on the right.

Closing the loop, and what it cost

Six legs, one carry-on, 41 days. The full ledger, printed small, with everything we would do differently.

Total spend €3,180, of which €412 was laundry and coffee, in that order. One pair of boots resoled in Lisbon by a man who charged less than the postage would have been.

What we would change: fewer flights, more ferries, and a lighter notebook. What we would not: the loop itself. Ending where you started is the only way to notice you have changed.
