Sir David Brewster patented the instrument in 1817 and lost the fortune within a season — the design was too easy to copy. Symmetry, it turns out, is hard to own.

The Mirror Angle
Set two mirrors at sixty degrees and the world obligingly repeats itself six times. Set them at thirty and it repeats twelve. Nothing is added; everything is doubled.

Section two
The fold, unrolled
Cut the tube lengthwise and the chamber flattens into pairs. Every panel on the left has a twin on the right; the seam between them is the same mirror that made the pattern.

One glass merchant
By 1819 the streets of London held two hundred thousand copies. The tube was cheap; the chamber was cheap; only the coloured chips inside were worth stealing.

The readable core
A pattern with no still point is only noise. We hold the centre steady and let the ornament rotate around it — the eye needs somewhere to land.

The unreadable rim
Detail belongs at the edge, where the eye is already moving. Push complexity outward and legibility inward and the composition organises itself.

Broken glass index
Our workshop keeps a ledger of every chip: cobalt, amber, rose, dichroic seconds from a shuttered lab in Jena. Each fragment is photographed before it enters the tube.

Field of repetition
Shake once and the ledger is void. That is the arrangement we agreed to: perfect record-keeping, followed by deliberate ruin, four times a year.
