00 — Departure

We slipped the harbour before light

The town was still asleep when we let go the last line. No bell, no farewell — only the cutter breathing under us and the water turning from ink to iron as the east began to pale.

01 — The Reach

Open water, and no word from land

By the second watch the coast had folded under the horizon. Out here the sea keeps its own hours; we counted them in sail changes and the long silences between them.

02 — The Squall

The sky came down to meet us

It arrived the way weather does up here — all at once, without apology. For an hour there was nothing but grey water standing up in walls and the mast writing frantic circles against the cloud.

03 — The Floe

White on white, and a great silence

Morning gave us the ice. It came as scattered plates, then fields, then a country of its own — and with it a quiet so complete you could hear the hull ticking against the cold.

04 — The Curtain

Then the whole night caught fire

We had almost stopped looking up. But the dark tore open in green and rose, folding and unfolding over the mast, and for a while nobody spoke — there was nothing a voice could add to it.

05 — Landfall

A black coast, and a single light

At the far edge of the dark stood a headland, and on it one small unwavering flame keeping its watch. We had come to the end of the chart, and something on that shore had been waiting all along.
